Supported '45 rebellion, and fled Scotland as a wanted man (1746). Stayed briefly in London, but then moved to Rome (1747) where he painted portraits of the emigre Jacobite community. Left Rome (1751), and travelled around Europe before settling in London (1754). Admitted to the Society of Artists (1765). Worked in America (1766-1771), before ultimately returning to Scotland (1771).
