Initially began career in Glasgow, and possibly spent some time in America. One of the original members of the Buchanan Society of Glasgow (1725). Moved to London in 1727 to provide a base for Scottish firms in Virginia for commercial and banking services. Initially began working for the Glasgow firm John Luke & Co, a tobacco importer. At various times had places of business in Mincing Lane, Mark Lane, and Crutched Friars in the south-east corner of the City. In is later years, developed same trade in in the West Indies and was the London financial agent of Lieutenant-Governor of Virginia and a member of the policy committee of the London association of merchants trading to the Chesapeake. Died at his country residence in Highgate (1758)
