Reputedly exiled to Surinam following participation in Argyll's rebellion. Ordained priest in London upon his return, and emerged as a recalcitrant nonjurer after 1688. Elected episcopal bishop of Dundee (1711). Secretly involved in unsanctioned negotiations for union of Church of England with Eastern Orthodox Church (c.1716). Elected episcopal bishop of Aberdeen (1721), but election disputed and he resigned (1724). Continued to reside in London whilst serving as Scottish bishop. Wrote several works of nonjuring theology. Gained possession of registers of Church of Scotland, 1560-1590, and presented them to Sion College, London (1737).
