Gained political influence through his maternal uncle 1st Marquess of Annandale who introduced him into London society. Became member of informal Scottish dining club. Successfully stood for Linlithgowshire and Linlithgow Burghs (1713-15), winning both seat. Unseated on petition for Linlithgowshire (1713-April 1714). Little impact whilst at Westminster. Did not stand for re-election in 1715 though continued to be actively involved in local politics. Died in Edinburgh 1727.
