Appointed a militia commissioner for Renfrew and Ayrshire by the Scottish privy council (1668). Outlawed February 1678 for refusing to take responsibility for his tenents' behaviour, yet still elected a commissioner for Ayrshire that year. Part of circle of Scottish dissidents invited to London for discussions about co-ordinated insurrections in Scotland and England. Accompanied by younger son, John (1683). Cochrane and his son both charged with treason for involement with the Bothwell Bridge rebels. Imprisoned in Tower of London but both father and son pardoned and released in 1685.
