Flemyng was a pupil of Alexander Monro primus, the first professor of anatomy at the University of Edinburgh. He then studied in Leiden before returning to Scotland to practice (1724/5. Flemyng had migrated to Hull by 1738 but moved to London in 1751. He lectured in physiology and published 'Intro to Physiology' (1759) the first of other physiological publications. Flemyng moved to Brigg, Lincolnshire 1752/3 where he remained until his death.
