Fourth marquess and first duke of Montrose. Named to the office of high admiral of Scotland by Queen Anne (1706). Helped with parliamentary union and was rewarded with title of duke (1707). On death of Queen Anne was called to London to administer the regency (1714). Appointed keeper of the signet and made one of secretaries of state. Named lord lieutenant of Dunbartonshire, sheriff-principal of Stirling, and keeper of the great seal of Scotland upon the accession of George II (1727). Likely divided time between Scotland and London. Died London 1742 and buried at Aberuthven, Perthshire.
