Educated at Marischal College. Travelled to London (1662), where he presented his designs for a new reflective telescope to the Royal Society, published as 'Optica promota' (1663). Lived in Italy (1664-1668), where he published 'Vera circuli et hyperbolae quadratura' (1667) and 'Geometriae pars universalis' (1668), two works of pure mathematics. Returned to London, and elected to the Royal Society (1668). Elected chair of mathematics at St Andrews (1668) and Edinburgh (1674), and so moved back to Scotland.
