Entered Scottish parliament (1665) and cemented political career in Berwickshire. Accompanied Duke of Hamilton to London 1674 to make grievances to the king. Imprisoned by king due to various objections, released 1676. Made plans to emigrate to North America but plan failed with emergence of Rye House Plot, forced into hiding. Travelled to Holland via London and established himself and family at Utrecht under pseudonym. Returned to London after revolution where Prince of Orange restored his estates. Made member of the Privy Council (1690) and created peer of Scotland as Lord Polwarth. Appointed Chancellor of Scotland (1696). Through royal favour of King William, raised to earldom as Earl of Marchmont (1697). Political influence declined after Act of Union. Died at Marchmont House 1724.
