Tenth Lord Maxwell and first Earl of Nithsdale. Warded in Edinburgh due to the fugitive status of his elder brother (1612-13). Held status of a border magnate (confirmed 1617). Included in Scottish privy council (1619). Was married at St Mary-le-Strand, London (1619). Nithsdale served in the House of Lords (from 1621) and continued royal favour under Charles I. Returned to Scotland to prepare for war between king and covenanters. He then accompanied General Digby on his march to Doncaster (1646). Unsuccessful and regrouped at Skipton. Nithsdale able to escape to Isle of Man where he died in 1646.
