As a young boy at the school of Dalmellington, joined Pentland Rising (1666), and fled to England after its defeat. Learned trade of tobacco-spinning at Newcastle and London, as well as in Dutch Republic. Back in Scotland by 1674, where he set up in Leith, and craved and was granted indemnity for his past actions.
