Reportedly a 'poor boy from Scotland'. Joined the navy by 1673, and served on a variety of ships, eventually becoming rear-admiral (1693). Official escort and translator to Tsar Peter I during his trip to England (1698). Appointed gentleman usher and usher of the black rod (1698). Vice-admiral (1701) and sat on several admiralty commissions (1699-1702). Lord High Admiral (1702-1708). Admiralty representative in negotiations with Dutch during War of the Spanish Success (1702-1706). Bought manor at Popes, near Hatfield, Hertfordshire (1686 x 1705), where he lived until his death.
