Tenth earl of Eglinton. Attended Irvine Grammar school before being sent to England to be educated at Winchester College (1738-40). Responsible for substantial tenurial developments and enclosures on his own lands by the early 1750s, and created Ayrshire's first local agricultural society. Displayed an increasing willingness to discipline presbyteries that refused to accept ministers presented by feudal patrons, thus Montgomerie made full use of his legal rights to nominate the new parish minister of Irvine. Rising influence of third earl of Bute used to appoint Montgomerie as a gentleman of the king's bedchamber (1760) and as a Scottish representative peer in 1761. Died at Eglinton 1770 during alteration with the Loudoun Campbells.
