Unanimously elected MP for Ayrshire in 1710. Familial connections helped secure Montgomerie a grant of the mastership of the Scottish mint. Listed as a Court Tory, though socially he mixed with Tories and Whigs. Was also marked as Hanoverian and was rewarded for his support after the Hanoverian succession. Re-elected 1715 and classified as a Whig, with political allegiance to the 'Leicester Fields' party. Financial difficulties led Montgomerie to be forced to give up his seat (1727). Was given post of Governor of New York and New Jersey. He died in New York in 1731.
