7th earl of Eglinton. Opposed ecclesiastical policy of Charles I, strongly supporting the proposals against the bishops. Joined the army and marched into England (1640). Present at battle of Newburn before being sent to garrison the castle of Tynemouth. Returned to Scotland in 1641. Again sent on military expedition to England in 1644. Taken prisoner in 1651 released only to be secured again in 1654 owing to escape of his brother Robert from the Tower of London. Montgomery still imprisoned in 1656.
