Soldier and burgess, became involved in Jacobite rebellion in 1689; father persuaded Murray to give himself up, taking oaths in 1693. Gradually reintegrated into government service, especially with help of the Duke of Atholl, being granted a number of appointments. Elected MP for Perthshire on interest of Atholl, and described as an episcopal Tory. Re-elected, not without some controversy, in 1713, though did step down in 1715. Played little, or no role, in the 1715 Jacobite rebellion. Died 1719.
