Son of Oswald, James (London). Educated at Edinburgh University, entered Lincoln's Inn (1733) and called to the bar (1738). Heavily involved in business and held a number of positions, sitting a numerous committees - Lord of Trade (1751-59), Lord of the Treasury (1759-63) and joint vice-treasurer of Ireland (1763-68). MP for Dysart Burghs (1741-47, 1751-68) and Fifeshire (1747-54). Conscientious member of parliament. As career and reputation grew, became known as one of the group of quasi-civil servants who considered their allegiance to the king and not to groups of politicians. Retired from public life in 1760s, died 1769.
