Initially a wealthy merchant captain, heavily involved in guild at Kirkcaldy. Successfully petitioned Scottish privy council and held seat in Scottish Parliament (1702). Elected as MP for Dysart Burghs. Classified as an episcopal Tory. Re-elected 1713 and labelled a Jacobite. Declined to stand for election in 1715. Died 1716.
