Apprenticed to a woolen draper in Edinburgh who spotted his talent for drawing natural history subjects. At some point in the early 1760s, family moved to London. Flower paintings by Parkinson were exhibited by the Free Society of Artists in London, 1765-66. Parkinson was then engaged to draw plants in Hammersmith nursery and educated James Lee, a fellow Scottish Quarker's daughter. Went on expeditions to Newfoundland and the south seas. Died at sea of Malaria in 1771.
