1729-1805. Born William Johnstone, but changed his name to Pulteney in 1767 after his wife inherited a vast fortune. Had various business investments in North America, Caribbean and India, and owned land in Grenada, West Indies, Florida and New York. Involved in developing Bath and seaside resorts in southern England. Wrote four political pamphlets. Opposed American independence, and opposed abolition of the salve trade. MP for Cromartyshire, 1768-1774, and subsequently MP for Shrewsbury, 1775-1805. Reputedly one of the wealthiest men in Great Britain.
