Son of Spottiswoode, John. Educated in Glasgow before becoming a fellow at Exeter College, Oxford. Returned to Scotland after travelling on the Continent, being admitted to the privy council in 1622. Took judicial title Lord New Abbey and was knighted in 1624. Quick political advancement throughout 1620s. Brief visit to London in late 1637/early 1638 when open resistance to the king started in Scotland. Believed to be an agent of the bishops and became vilified in Scotland. At brink of civil war, went to London (1639). Returned to Scotland with Charles I in 1641. Joined army of Duke of Montrose. Captured after Montrose's defeat at Philiphaugh. Imprisoned in Glasgow. Executed 1646.
