Apprenticed to Mossman and Brown, king's printers in Scotland (c.1729-36). Migrated to London and worked as a journeyman compositor for William Bowyer (1736-38). Began own business and was admitted by redemption to the freedom of the Stationers' Company. Became a freeman of the City of London. By 1740 had established himself at Wine Office Court, St. Bride's Parish. Embarked on wholesale trade in books to Philadelphia. Admitted to the livery of the Stationers' Company (1742). Moved to larger quarters at corner of Little New Street and Printer Street (1748). In addition to printing and selling, was in the copyright business. Died 1785, at the height of success and with vast wealth.
