Laird of Cromarty, living under crushing debts which he spent his life trying to pay down. Resident in London - supposedly Clare Street - for several spells during the early- to mid-1640s, partly seeking royal favour and partly looking for publishers for his various literary works. Also traveled abroad during this period. Back in Scotland by 1646. Supported the Engagement (1648) and Charles II's regime (1650-1651). Captured after the battle of Worcester (1651), and imprisoned in London, where he continued to write and publish. Released (c.1655), after which he traveled abroad, but also spent time on his estates in Scotland. Died 1660.
