Son of Veitch, William and Veitch, Marion.

Lived at Fallowlees, Northumberland in childhood before being educated at Utrecht. Joined the army of William of Orange. Sailed for North America in 1698. Briefly returned to Britain in 1708 in attempt to convince Queen Anne to sponsor a plan to conquer French Canada, which the Queen approved (although the plan was abandoned the following year). Did not find the greatest of successes in North America - though was twice appointed governor of Nova Scotia (c.1710 & 1715). Finances were also in ruins and Vetch returned with his family to England in 1717. Vetch encountered equal difficulties once in England and was eventually imprisoned for debt in London where he died in 1732.
